How to Use the Fit For The Job Emulsion Roller Sleeve

1. Rinse it in cool or tepid water before first use, then let it dry completely.
2. Slide it onto your frame and check it turns freely.
3. Pour paint into your tray, keeping below the ribbed section.
4. Load the sleeve, then roll it on the ribbed area until evenly coated all round.
5. Work in sections rather than trying to stretch one load too far.
6. Finish each section with light strokes in one direction.
7. Wash it out in warm water as soon as you have finished.

Rinse It Before You Start

This step gets skipped and it should not be. A new sleeve carries loose fibres from manufacture, and if you go straight to the wall those fibres end up in your first coat. You then have to sand them out. Two minutes at the sink beforehand saves that entirely.

Choosing the Right Pile

Pile depth should suit the surface. Medium works for plaster, plasterboard, ceilings, and anything up to light Artex, which covers most interior work. For rough exterior masonry such as brick, render, or pebbledash you want a long pile instead, or the roller will skim across the high points and leave the dips bare.

Cleaning

Wash it out while the emulsion is still wet, working your fingers down into the pile until the water runs clear. Squeeze the excess out, reshape it by hand, and stand it on end to dry so the pile does not flatten on one side.
